Kobya: Professional Fool

I come from the Ronga tribes of Mozambique in South East Africa, growing up in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, a country once torn by civil war for many years. I fled my country during the uprising in 1974 and fled to South Africa, finding myself in another uprising in Soweto, South Africa in 1976. In 1983, the South African Government announced a State of Emergency, of which I survived the bombing of Khotso House (South African Council of Churches). I was forced to flee and with the help of the United Nations and the Australian Government I arrived in Australia in 1986 as an asylum seeker.

I am singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Through my music, I aim to break barriers by exploring new sounds with strong messages expressing love and concern for humanity whilst celebrating life. I sing about the world today, what it was yesterday and what I wish for tomorrow. Through my music, I aim to energise and unite communities and celebrate the diversity of cultures within any community. I have contributed to bringing African rhythm and sound to Australia through performances & workshops. - Kobya
